The main DJ stage at Defqon.1 2009

Q-Dance Australia held the inaugural Defqon.1 festival at the Sydney International Regatta Centre in Penrith on the 19 September 2009. An 11 hour dance party, described as representing the harder styles in dance music, the event consisted of 5 DJ stages, each with different styles of music.  Q-Dance has engaged Auditoria as the audio consultants for the event since 2009.

In preparation for the 2009 event Auditoria:

  • Worked with Q-dance Australia to create a sound management plan for the venue. This included direct liaison with the Penrith City Council and the venue,
  • Conducted an onsite test with the main loudspeaker system prior to the event. A series of measurements were taken during this test around the boundary of the site,
  • Developed a noise management strategy and noise level limits based on the test measurements and industry best practice,
  • Designed the sound systems for the event to minimise the noise spill to residential areas.

During the event, the team at Auditoria were onsite to:

  • Calibrate the sound systems to agreed operating levels,
  • Monitor the event with four remote SPL NET Remote logging stations,
  • Conduct offsite measurements at six residential locations.

In 2010 Auditoria's preparatory work focused on updating the sound management plan, consultation for the revised site layout and their possible impact on the local residents. This work was combined with the onsite monitoring during the event to be able to respond quickly to noise enquiries.

The events have been a great success for Q-Dance Australia, Penrith City Council and the Sydney International Regatta Centre.
